CMP Update: Release of Draft Screening Assessments for Batch 2 Substances under the Challenge component of the Chemicals Management Plan

The notices containing summaries of draft screening assessment reports for all Batch 2 substances proposed "toxic" were published in Canada Gazette Part I on May 17. The notices for substances proposed "not toxic" will be published in Canada Gazette Part I on May 24.

There were originally 17 substances included in Batch 2, however the draft screening assessment report and risk management scope for bisphenol A were released on April 18, 2008.

Of the remaining 16 substances, 11 of these are proposed "toxic" (5 toxic to the environment and 6 toxic to human health) and will be recommended for addition to the List of Toxic Substances under Schedule 1 of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 (CEPA, 1999). Four of the 11 toxic substances are also being proposed for Virtual Elimination.

Five of the 16 substances were determined to not meet the criteria for toxic as defined under CEPA, 1999. However, Significant New Activity (SNAC) provisions will be applied to two of these substances as they would have met the toxic criteria had they been found to be in commerce in Canada. This will prevent them from being used in the future without undergoing a thorough assessment and review.
