Objectives
This project will generate broad-based and long-term improvements in the capacity of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and other civil society groups to access and respond to the management of toxic chemicals in Canada, by:
- Ensuring that Project Researchers at Environmental Defence can access, review, and analyze information related to the Chemicals Management Plan (CMP) on behalf of NGOs and other civil society groups, and that this information meets the needs of stakeholder groups;
- Assisting NGOs to access information, understand the issues, and provide input during comment periods on decisions regarding chemicals of concern;
- Creating a repository of information on the health and environmental effects of chemical substances under consideration for use by civil society;
- Ensuring that this knowledge is disseminated in a timely and effective manner, allowing civil society groups to respond and provide relevant input to the Government of Canada and the public;
- Providing a public record of civil society responses and contributions to the CMP, as well as learning tools and opportunities for public input;
- Facilitating the election of qualified, experienced and committed NGO/civil society representatives from across Canada to the multi-stakeholder Advisory Committee;
- Facilitating ongoing meaningful communication, in both official languages, between the Project Researchers, Canadian Environmental Network (RCEN) staff, the National Advisory Committee and their respective constituencies.
RCEN and Environmental Defence gratefully acknowledge the financial support of Health Canada on this project.
