Four ENGOs (Reach for Unbleached, Canadian Environmental Law Association, Environmental Health Association of Nova Scotia, in association with Learning Disabilities Association of Canada) drafted a consolidated report with their recommendations to Environment Canada and Health Canada on Proposed Action Plan on PFCAs and its Precursors. |
This report supports the current efforts by Environment Canada and Health Canada to take action on Perfluorinated Carboxylic Acids (PFCAs) and Precursors through the development of an Action Plan. These substances have been found to be persistent and potentially highly bioaccumulative in the environment. PFCs have a variety of uses, including in and on household products (e.g., paints, to promote water repellency in paper, carpets and sofas). The data suggest that of up to 95% of fluorochemicals used in carpet treatment are released over an average lifetime of 9 years, resulting in exposures to children.
As the government considers the components to be incorporated into the Action Plan, we ask that the following issues and comments be given careful consideration to ensure the protection of human health, wildlife and environment from exposure to these substances.
