Action Alert:

Environmental groups call for ban on brominated flame retardants

Environmentalists are calling for the immediate phase-out of "brominated flame retardants," substances which Environment Canada recently found to be toxic in that they pose a danger to the environment. These substances, although originally intended to enhance safety by increasing the resistance of products to fire, actually emit a dioxin-like emission when burned. Based on findings by Environment Canada, the Canadian Environmental Law Association and Environmental Defence Canada are calling on federal Environment Minister Anderson to take immediate regulatory action to phase out and ban brominated flame retardants.
