Action Alert:
GE mandatory labelling in Quebec
ALERT ! SIGN-ON FROM GROUPS (deadline Sept 15, 2004)
PLEASE HELP US to get the Quebec governement to impose
mandatory labelling for GE food. The current Liberal government
(PLQ = Quebec Liberal Party) has promised mandatory labelling.
A
recent unanimous report from the Quebec Agriculture
Parliamentary Committee recommanded mandatory labelling
harmonised with the european system. If Quebec implemented
mandatory labelling it would have enormous positive impact in
the
rest of North America (USA and Canada).
Greenpeace is coordinating a sign-on letter that is in french-only
unfortunatelly (see below for the full text). This letter is addressed
to the Quebec Agriculture minister to remind her of the PLQ
promise in favor of mandatory labelling. The letter has already
the
support from some of Quebec environmental and social NGOs,
consumer groups, unions, churches, students' associations, food
retailers, women's groups, etc... It is still circulating within
Quebec.
The letter makes 3 demands:
1. that the Quebec government table a specific proposal in favour
of
mandatory labelling of GE in order to adopt it before the end
of
2004;
2. that the Quebec government send a letter to other (Canadian)
provinces (States) stating the firm intention of the Quebec
government to implement mandatory labelling of GE food and
urging them to do the same;
3. that the Quebec government adopt a clear timetable to follow-up
on the other recommandations of the Parliamentary Agriculture
Committee that recommanded European-style mandatory labelling.
This open letter could be the basis of newspaper ads that might
be
published in Quebec papers later in the fall and therefore the
name
of your organisation might appear.
PLEASE COULD YOUR ASSOCIATION / ORGANISATIONS SIGN
ON THIS OPEN LETTER? (EVEN IF IT IN FRENCH!)
