Action Alert

Living Oceans Society - Robson Bight clean-up must begin now

Help us ensure that the fuel truck and logging equipment are removed from Robson Bight whale reserve before the orcas return in June. In order for the equipment to be safely removed in time, the government must take immediate action.

On April 9th, Fisheries Minister Loyola Hearn was asked in Parliament if he had a plan in place to remove the equipment before the whales return. He replied: “Sometimes trying to remove things such as the tanker can do more harm than good and we are not going to do that.”

The threat of the fuel truck leaking is not a barrier to recovery, as the Minister would have us believe. Living Oceans Society consulted with Nuytco Research, who conducted the underwater assessment, to find out about containing any spills during recovery. Nuytco can cloak the truck while it is being pulled to the surface, ensuring that if the fuel tank does leak, the diesel remains enclosed and can be safely removed from the ocean.

How long we have before the fuel truck begins to leak due to corrosion is anyone’s guess, but we can’t afford to gamble. Please take action by contacting Minister Hearn and help us ensure the equipment is removed now. Phone the Minister of Fisheries and ask him to raise the wreckage before the orcas return in June.
