CCME Draft Commitment Statement on Environmental Sustainability in Canada

The Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment (CCME), which is composed of the Environment Ministers from all provinces, territories and the federal government, has released the draft "Commitment Statement on Environmental Sustainability in Canada" for comments.

The Commitment Statement is intended to provide a new framework for improved intergovernmental collaboration on decision-making and action on environmental sustainability in Canada. Ministers will consider it for finalization later this year.

The Commitment Statement reflects a systems approach to environmental management in which governments collectively set national environmental outcomes to support a high level of environmental quality, improved health and quality of life and a strong economy. Governments will collaboratively decide how best to meet these outcomes to achieve greater efficiency and effectiveness in environmental management.  This document also recognizes that all Canadians share responsibility for environmental
protection.

It has been recommended that ENGOs may wish to provide feedback to their province/territory, to the federal government and directly to the CCMEand may wish to consider taking other actions such as a petition or sign on position for ENGOs to sign, media releases, etc.
