Get out your pens and pencils and show your support for regulating GHGs through CEPA . The comment period ends the first week of November and word is industry has come out in force to object to regulating greenhouse gases. |
| Environment Canada needs your support to bolster its position. |
| This is of critical importance to establishing government's authority to regulate greenhouse gas emissions, something we have all worked for and now that it is within our grasp we all need to get behind it. |

AN EXAMPLE OF WHAT ACTION CAN DO (OR NOT DO)
Have I told you about taking the Nova Scotia government to court in the early 90s over going ahead with the Point Aconi coal fired power plant
with one environmental assessment. I attended some meetings and a rally and clearly hundreds where opposed to the plant and wanted a real
environmental assessment. So we went to court arguing that the public was never given an opportunity to make its views known. Our lawyers all decked out in their gowns and whigs presented our case and then the Gov. of Nova Scotia got up and said, "We have received only four letters
from the public so we don't see where all this public concern is coming
from".
|
| We lost the case and Nova Scotia built the plant ...... |
It is important to follow the instruction below, even if all you say is "I support the regulation of greenhouse gases under CEPA".
|
| |
| 1. Look at the Gazette notice proposing GHGs be added to CEPA - http://canadagazette.gc.ca/partI/2005/20050903/html/regle4-e.html |
| |
2. Draft a letter or submission supporting the government's proposal. It doesn't matter whether comments are brief or lengthy, although it would
probably be helpful to reinforce each of the key elements of the government's reasoning.
|
| |
3. Explicitly cite in the letter or submission "Canada Gazette, Part I, September 3, 2005, Order Adding Toxic Substances to Schedule 1 to the
Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999."
|
| |
4. BY NOVEMBER 2 AT THE LATEST, send the letter or submission by FAX and email to: Cynthia Wright, Director General, Strategic Policy Directorate,Environmental Protection Service, Department of the Environment, Ottawa, Ontario K1A 0H3 FAX: (819) 997-0449
Email: Cynthia.Wright@ec.gc.ca
