The Parliament's Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs
and International Trade has adopted a report asking the
Government of Canada to make a clear commitment to abide
by international human rights standards in regards to
Canadian mining operations overseas. The report calls
on the Government to stop using taxpayer money to support
destructive Canadian mining projects abroad; hold Canadian
mining companies legally accountable for environmental
and human rights violations in other countries; and force
the World Bank to respect international human rights standards.
The Government now has approximately 90 days left to respond
to the report.
A copy of the report is available on the Parliament
of Canada website
Mining Watch Canada and Friends of the Earth (FOE) are
asking ENGOs to broadly disseminate the message, to contact
the government and write to their Members of Parliament
to support the report, and help support their work through
donations.
