Action Alert: World Wide Day of Action on Climate Change

As many of you already know the most important climate change meeting of our times is coming to Montreal from November 28th to December 9th. The decisions made or not made at the UN conference will forever change the history of our little planet. But politicians rarely act unless there is pressure and one thing youth are great at is pressuring the current generation to change. On December 3rd we need YOU!!!

December 3rd is the World Wide Day of Action on Climate Change and we need to ensure our politicians get the message. Already events are being organized in Australia, Bangladesh, Brasil, Bulgaria, Chile, England, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Nicaragua, Northern Ireland, Peru, the Philipines, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Scotland, Turkey, Uganda, United Kingdom, USA, and Venezuela. We are hoping that you will help light up Canada with climate change events right across the country.

Here are a few things that you can do:

  • Hold a campus or community forum on climate change. Download the forum organizing guide at http://www.energyaction.net/forums. Contact Rosa at director@syc-cjs.org if you are interested in holding a forum in your area.
Hold a climate change related event to raise awareness that the meetings that are happening and to give the youth delegation more power to get there views across. Possible events:
  • Hold a small rally and/or a hockey game. A group in London is organizing a march to a rink where they will have hockey players speak on climate change before they lace up their skates and play a game. Why hockey? Well climate change is destroying our ability to play hockey outdoors go to www.savehockey.ca for more information. (It would be AMAZING!!! To have games right across the country).
  • Set up a Climate Change Crime Scene: Surround your local MP's office with yellow police tape (often available at theater supply stores) so it looks like a crime scene. Put up some signs reading, "Global Warming Crime Scene" and become a Climate Change Scene Investigator (CCSI).
  • Send a Delegation: Diplomats send delegations to meet with people all the time, why shouldn't you? Get a penguin costume and a Santa Suit and send your North and South pole representatives to tell your MP the importance of making future commitments.
  • Write a letter to Minister Dion and let him know your thoughts – he can be reached at:
    House of Commons
                Ottawa, Ontario
                K1A 0A6
                Telephone: (613) 996-5789
                Fax: (613) 996-6562
                E-Mail: Dion.S@parl.gc.ca

These are just a few ideas. I am sure there are lots more. I really hope you take this challenge as the pressure to act on climate change could never be more important.

Post your actions and events at http://www.energyaction.net/forums
