CALL FOR NOMINATIONS

RCEN Nominations Committee Seeking Candidates

The Canadian Environmental Network’s (RCEN) Nominations Committee is currently seeking candidates to fill the following vacancies at the National Council level: 2 Aboriginal seats, 3 Francophone seats and 3 Youth seats. Youth are encouraged to apply for any of the vacant positions. Potential candidates must be members in good standing of an RCEN member group and be willing to serve a term of three years (for more information about the role and responsibilities of National Council members, please see our by-laws). To apply please submit a letter of nomination from your member group, and two letters of support; one from another member group and one from an RCEN Regional Affiliate Network or caucus. The deadline for submitting letters of nomination is Friday, March 17, 2006. RCEN Staff Update

The Canadian Environmental Network (RCEN) would like to thank Ellen Mullally, who is leaving the RCEN to pursue other opportunities, for her dedication and hard work. Among other accomplishments, Ellen organized the RCEN 2005 Annual General Meeting and Conference, with great success. We would like to thank her and wish her the best of luck!

New Website for World Urban Forum Youth Related Events

A new website for youth participation to the World Urban Forum is now available. The website provides youth with background information on the WUF, including the World Youth Forum taking place the weekend before the WUF, as well as the World Urban Café, an international series of community engagement events combining performance with dialogue. From the website, youth can also subscribe to the official World Urban Forum newsletter and download the WUF registration application form.

International Youth Summit on Sustainable Urban Transporation 

The Canadian Urban Transit Association is currently organizing the International Youth Summit on Sustainable Urban Transportation, "Building leadership in urban sustainability", in Montreal, Quebec on July 12-17, 2006. The International Youth Summit creates an opportunity for delegates to: discuss and discover the role of transit, walking and cycling in fostering urban sustainability; learn about international best practices in urban and transportation planning; initiate a mentor assisted project or activity relating to a sustainable transportation theme; and build a network of contacts of national or international leaders.

Spaces are available for 80 youth, between the ages of 18 and 24. To download an application form and for more information go to the Youth Summit website. The application deadline is Friday, March 31st.

Ban Terminator Meeting in Ottaw

The Ban Terminator Campaign Steering Committee (ETC Group, Inter Pares, National Farms Union and USC Canada) are organizing a meeting "TERMINATOR ON TRIAL": Suicide Seed Technology, Implications for Global Food Security and Farmers' to discuss Suicide Seed Technology and the implication for global food security and farmers’ rights, on March 20th in Ottawa. There will also be a live link to the UN Biodiversity Convention meeting in Brazil. Everyone is welcome and the admission is free (donations welcome).

Commission on Sustainable Development’s 14th Session

The RCEN ENGO members are invited to participate in a consultation meeting with federal government officials in preparation for the Commission on Sustainable Development’s Fourteenth Session. The meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 21st, 2006 from 2:00pm to 4:00pm at the Department of Foreign Affairs, 111 Sussex Drive, Ottawa. To confirm your participation to the meeting, contact Chris Plunkett of the Environment and Energy Division, e-mail: Chris.Plunkett@international.gc.ca and copy Sarah Heiberg, at sarah@cen-rce.org. For questions, or if you cannot attend the meeting but would like to participate by teleconference, please also contact Mr.Plunkett at (613) 996-0740.

The CSD-14 will be held in New York from May 1 - 12, 2006.  In preparation, the UN Secretary General has prepared three reports, which are posted on the CSD website, along with more information on CSD-14.

Coordinator Northern Outreach Project, CPAWS

The Wildlands League (CPAWS) is seeking an outreach coordinator to work out of their Thunder Bay office, with a passion for wilderness, to manage their northern outreach project. Some travel is required. The Northern Outreach Project is designed to build a dialogue on economic opportunities for northern prosperity. The outreach project will consider workshops, panel discussions, conferences and other activities as part of the overall strategy to build dialogue. The succesful candidate should have a relevant degree and/or equivalent educational qualifications, in-depth knowledge of forest policy and practices, conservation biology and the dynamics of resource dependent communities in northern Ontario and a minimum 3 years related experience. The deadline for applications is March 24, 2006.

ii.
Summer Internship for University in NW Russian Nature Reserves

The American Association for the Support of Ecological Initiatives (AASEI) in conjunction with Russian partner Adonis, are inviting students to apply to their
summer internship program in northwest Russia. With an environmental and cultural focus, this program introduces students to Russia’s unique system of protected areas, and to the people who work in them. Besides interacting with protected area staff, students work closely with Russian college students who share similar interests in ecology and environmental issues. The total length of program is 4 weeks, July 1-29, 2006.


AASEI and Adonis cover all program costs in Russia, and provide visa support. Students are responsible for Russian visa fees and airfare to and from Russia.
