Conference Calls on Proposed Regulatory Provisions for the export and import of non-hazardous waste

Environment Canada (EC) is seeking 5 ENGO delegates to take part in three conference calls regarding proposed regulatory provisions for the export and import of non-hazardous waste, on which EC has drafted a discussion document. The first of the three teleconferences will take place on Monday, June 12th 2006. Each delegate will receive $1,000 to review information and to attend the 3 conference calls. A final consolidated ENGO position paper is expected by July 31st, 2006. Funds in the amount of $2,500 are available for research, writing, reviewing, and editing. The deadline to apply is Monday, May 29, 2006.
The discussion document, contains an abridged description of the objectives, structure, and content of the proposed regulatory provisions, as well as the operational procedures to be followed once they are put into place. Many of the ideas this document puts forward reflect input from multi-stakeholder consultations that have taken place on the subject over the past four years. The purpose of the current consultations is to invite all stakeholders to provide their comments on the proposed regulatory provisions, raise awareness of their concerns, and contribute to the development of recommendations that are based on a common understanding of the environmental benefits to be achieved through these provisions.
Correction to last week’s notice: To apply, fill out the online application form and send it to Olivier Bertin Mahieux, RCEN Caucus Coordinator. For more information, visit EC’s website or contact Olivier Bertin-Mahieux at tel.: (613) 728-9810 ext. 34.

Call for Comments – UNFF Secretariat Series of Online Fora

The United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF) Secretariat is introducing a series of online fora titled "Root Causes of Deforestation".  Through this series the UNFF will aim at better involving the online community. The UNFF would like to know more about their audience such as who they are, their specific interests and the types of forestry activities they are involved in. The online forum will be closely linked to its bimonthly newsletter, and summaries will become available. Through their first exercise they would like their audience to express what, in their views, are the root causes of deforestation. This general discussion will allow them to explore the subject later in a more detailed manner and according to principal interests.
As a test run, the UNFF has posted the first online discussion for a one-week period, from May: 22 – 26 May 2006. The forum may be accessed through the UNFF website.

Atlantic Canadians’ Declaration Against Atlantica

ENGOs are invited to sign onto Atlantic Canadians’ Declaration Against Atlantica before June 8, 2006. According to some ENGOs, Atlantica, the International Northeast Economic Region (AINER), is charting a course towards breaking down barriers for big business in Atlantic Canada, Eastern Quebec, and the Northeast United States. They maintain that, while Atlantica acknowledges economic distressed regions of Newfoundland, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia, it seeks to perpetuate local economic hardship in these regions by lowering minimum wage and concentrating economic wealth in a proposed Atlantica triangle. For more information on the protests being planned, visit the Stop Atlantica webpage.

CCME Analysis of Canadian and Other Water Conservations Practices

The Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment (CCME) Water Conservation and Economics Task Group has released “An Analysis of Canadian and Other Water Conservation Practices and Initiatives:  Issues, Opportunities and Suggested Directions”, prepared by J. Kinkead Consulting. The analysis is intended to document relevant strategies and actions that Canadian governments, communities, businesses and households can pursue to ensure that water is used in an efficient, productive and sustainable manner. The analysis examines water conservation approaches in use across Canada and in several other countries. It focuses on how freshwater resources are used and managed in the dual contexts of geographic areas and water use sectors. Major sectors include municipal supply, agriculture, thermal power generation, resource extraction, manufacturing, and recreation.
