Teleconferences on Proposed Revisions to the Federal Mobile PCB Treatment and Destruction Regulations

Environment Canada is seeking four (4) ENGO representatives to meet during three conference calls to provide their comments on the proposed revisions to the Federal Mobile PCB Treatment and Destruction Regulations. Environment Canada is currently developing recommendations for updating the polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) regulatory framework under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999. This process entails considering new developments based both on updated technologies and on Canada's national and international commitments to PCB management.
The first of the three conference calls will take place on Monday, July 17th, 2006. Each delegate will receive $1,000 to review information and to attend the 3 conference calls. A final consolidated ENGO position paper is expected by October 31st, 2006. Funds in the amount of $2,500 are available for research, writing, reviewing, and editing.
To apply or for more information, visit the RCEN website or contact Olivier Bertin-Mahieux, RCEN Caucus Coordinator, ext. 34. The deadline to apply is Friday, June 23rd, 2006.

Earth Gathering at the Grassy Narrows Blockade, Northern First Nations

In December 2002, the indigenous youth of Grassy Narrows lay down in the path of industrial logging trucks, blocking access to their traditional lands and sparking what is now the longest standing indigenous blockade in Canada. This summer the Rainforest Action Network and ForestEthics are inviting ENGOs to a week of workshops, trainings, stories, campfires, feasting, music and action at the Grassy Narrows blockade on July 10-16, 2006, to support the blockade and build the bonds between indigenous land struggles and the environmental movement. Transportation is being arranged from key regions to Grassy Narrows (near Kenora Ontario, Canada).  Gas subsidies will be provided to people who bring a full vehicle.
For more information, contact Jocelyn Cheechoo, Northern First Nations, Kim Fry in Southern ON, Damien Lee in inNorthern ON, Shelagh in Manitoba, and Bob Poeschl in Wisconsin and Minnesota. Unions and activist groups are encouraged to sponsor a vehicle or contribute to the cost of a bus: contact Kim Fry.
For more information, logistical details and updates visit the Free Grassy website.

Petition to Protect Canada’s Far North from Climate Change

Nature Canada is encouraging ENGOs to participate in a petition asking the federal government to do more to protect the polar bear's habitat and slow the effects of global warming in Canada's Far North. The petition is part of a new web site Nature Canada has launched that introduces Charles and Roger, two polar bears who want the rest of the world to see what’s happening to their home. Individuals are encouraged to hear what Charles and Roger have to say, (the site includes an animated video and an audio interview with Charles the bear) then sign the petition and forward it to friends and colleagues.
