Calls For Delegates

 
i.
Pulp and Paper Air Quality Forum
 

Environment Canada is seeking ten (10) ENGO delegates at an executive director level or at a strategic level to attend a 1-1/2 day meeting in Ottawa in July 2006, to review the work that has been done at the Pulp and Paper Air Quality Forum. The exact dates will be confirmed shortly. Robert Larocque,  Head Air Quality Section, Environment Canada will be available to answer questions during the meeting. Someone from the Forest Products Association of Canada will probably give a short presentation. Some ENGO-only time for discussion will also be allocated during the meeting. Travel, accommodation and meals will be covered as per Treasury Board Guidelines. Selected ENGO delegates will each receive $750 for preparation time and for attending the 1-1/2 day session.

Proposed Revisions to the Federal Mobile PCB Treatment and Destruction Regulations
 

Environment Canada is seeking four (4) ENGO representatives to meet during three conference calls to provide their comments on the proposed revisions to the Federal Mobile PCB Treatment and Destruction Regulations. Environment Canada is currently developing recommendations for updating the polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) regulatory framework under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999. This process entails considering new developments based both on updated technologies and on Canada's national and international commitments to PCB management.
The first of the three conference calls will take place on Monday, July 17th, 2006. Each delegate will receive $1,000 to review information and to attend the 3 conference calls. A final consolidated ENGO position paper is expected by October 31st, 2006. Funds in the amount of $2,500 are available for research, writing, reviewing, and editing.

Call for Offers – Consolidation of the Canadian Environmental Network’s National Database

 

The Canadian Environmental Network (RCEN) has launched a Call for Offers for a project to consolidate the RCEN’s database into a national centralized database favoring the accessibility of information by its users.

Department of Finance Consultations on Sustainable Development Strategy

 

The Department of Finance, like other government departments, tabled its first Sustainable Development Strategy (SDS) in 1997, its second in 2001 and its third in 2004. They are now in the process of developing their fourth strategy to cover the years 2007-09. To assist in their preparations, the Department of Finance would like to meet with various ENGOs and other stakeholders to discuss Finance's draft SDS framework.  In this context, ENGOs are invited to attend a consultation event on Thursday June 29, 2006 from 10:00am - 12:00pm at the Department of Finance in Ottawa. The feedback received at this consultation session will contribute to the development a new strategy and help determine what the targets for action will be over the next three years. Public Review of Proposed Changes to Ontario’s Endangered Species Act

 

Ontario is updating its endangered species legislation to provide for broader protection and recovery of species at risk and their habitats. The public is invited to review proposed changes. ENGOs are invited to make a difference to the future of endangered species in Ontario by completing an online questionnaire or writing a letter by July 7, 2006. For more information, including recommended questionnaire responses and a sample letter, visit the Save Ontario Species website.

World Urban Forum Roundtable on the Environment
 

Please read the following two important changes about the World Urban Forum Roundtable on the Environment, taking place in Vancouver on Wednesday, June 21st from 2:30 – 5:30 pm: ROUNDTABLE ON THE ENVIRONMENT IN EXHIBITION HALL A:
The location of the Roundtable on the Environment has been changed. The Roundtable on the Environment will now be held on Wednesday, June 21st from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm in Exhibition Hall A on the Exhibition floor in the Vancouver Convention and Exhibition Centre. New MEND Publication on Paste Backfill Geochemistry Now Available

 

A new Mine Environment Neutral Drainage (MEND) publication entitled Paste Backfill Geochemistry – Environmental Effects of Leaching and Weathering is now available. This report provides a brief summary pertaining to current practices in the geochemical characterization of both cemented and uncemented paste backfill, and methods used to predict environmental impacts to surface and ground water quality associated with the application of paste backfill in underground applications. Data was collected via a literature review, and a survey of mines known to use paste backfill. Recommendations for future work were also provided.

The National Orphaned/Abandoned Mines Initiative (NOAMI) is hosting the "Orphaned and Abandoned Mines:  A Workshop to Explore Best Practices" event, to be held in Winnipeg, Manitoba on October 26 and 27, 2006. The themes of the workshop are as follows: Setting Priorities; Public Engagement and Capacity Building; Partnership Approaches; Funding options and; Applying Best Practices - bringing it all together.

Enviro-Pro 2006 in Mexico City

 

The Government of Canada (Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Industry Canada, Natural Resources Canada and Environment Canada) and E.J. Krause, are pleased to invite Canadian exporters to exhibit as part of the Enviro-Pro 2006, on September 27-29, 2006 in Mexico City.  Environmental manufacturers and service providers will have access to an estimated 5,000 visitors seeking professional environmental services and state-of-the-art environmental equipment. Sentinelles Petitcodiac Riverkeeper, an independent, community-based, non-profit organization dedicated to protecting and restoring the ecosystems of the Petitcodiac, Memramcook, and Shepody Rivers and to supporting the resolution of related environmental problems, is seeking a suitable candidate for the position of Executive Director / Riverkeeper. Guided by the Board of Directors, she or he will manage and oversee the day-to-day affairs of the organization. Other functions include patrolling area waterways. Familiarity with water quality issues affecting the Petitcodiac and Shepody ecosystems and excellent oral and written communication skills in English and French are among the qualifications and attributes being sought. The Free Range Worker Co-operative is seeking a half-time Community Organizer to be based in Quebec, Eastern Ontario or Atlantic Canada. The Free Range Worker Co-operative provides organizational and administrative support to the Beyond Factory Farming Coalition. Preference will go to candidates who are: Fluently bilingual; Proficient in media work; Excellent understanding of the political, social, economic, legal, labour, health, animal welfare, consumer and/or environmental issues relevant to industrial livestock operations and socially responsible livestock production; Experienced in working with community groups; Ability to facilitate connections among francophone and anglophone groups, within and outside of Quebec; Good writing and research skills and; Desire to work in a co-operative organizational structure. Newfoundland Climate Action Campaign Coordinator, Sierra Club of Canada - Atlantic Canada Chapter

 

The Sierra Club of Canada (SCC) - Atlantic Canada Chapter is seeking Climate Action Campaigner to implement a multi-faceted province-wide campaign to push the envelope on energy efficiency and accelerate the adoption of renewable green energy in ways which will enhance community economic development. The SCC will be working with a broad spectrum of partners throughout the region to make Atlantic Canada a centre for sustainable energy development. Duties will include public outreach, networking, media relations, participating with other groups in joint activities, maintaining a website, researching and writing funding proposals and preparing reports to funders.
