ENGO Participation at the Forest Sector Sustainability Table |

Environment Canada has asked the RCEN to select 1 ENGO representative for the Forest Sector Sustainability Table (FSST) for a meeting scheduled for March 23, 2007 in Ottawa. The term length for the selected ENGO is yet to be confirmed. The selected ENGO representative will be expected to participate in a preparatory task group conference call, to take minutes and represent the views of the ENGOs during the meeting, and write up a report following the meeting. The selected delegate will receive $500 per day of preparation and $500 per day of meeting, based on a 2:1 formula. Moreover, travel, accommodation and meals for meetings will be covered as per Treasury Board Guidelines. The deadline to apply is February 9, 2006. The Parliamentary Review of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA 1999) is wrapping up. Please send your Senate submissions by February 28, 2007 as the Committee must present its report no later than March 31, 2007. Senate submissions should be sent to the Committee Clerk, Keli Hogan. Cross-Canada Dialogue on Environment: "If YOU were Prime Minister..." |

|
David Suzuki has launched an election-style cross-canada campaign: “If you were Prime Minister, what would you do for the environment?”. When the tour wraps up in March, he'll take Canadians’ concerns and ideas to Ottawa. In addition to speaking events, Dr. Suzuki will meet with local community and business groups, First Nations, athletes and others to discuss practical solutions to the challenges posed by global warming. Canadians are also encouraged to submit 20-second "If YOU were Prime Minister..." videos. Joint RCEN CEPA House of Commons Submission |

The RCEN members on the CEPA Committee have prepared and submitted a joint Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA 1999) House of Commons submission. The submission reinforces the key themes and priorities that NGOs have identified during the Parliamentary Review and offers recommendations where the Act can be improved. This document was submitted to the House of Commons Environment Committee with 82 sign-ons from health and environmental organizations from across the country. Latest Version of Listings of Species at Risk in Canada Now Available |
| |
The Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) has just released the latest version of its listings of species at risk in Canada. The booklet, available online, contains information on the 534 species deemed at some level of risk in Canada, including 65 bird species and subspecies. Interim Oil Sands Consultation Report |
| |
Following consultations with the public, a multistakeholder committee (MSC) has developed an interim report, which identifies a vision and principles for the future of oil sands development in Alberta. The multistakeholder committee includes representatives from First Nations, Métis, industry, environmental groups, as well as local, provincial and the federal governments. The final report is scheduled to be submitted to government by June 30, 2007. A copy of the Multistakeholder Committee Interim Report for Phase I, as well as further information related to this consultation initiative, is available on the consultation website. Call for Applications: Clean Technology Funding Applications |
|
|
Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC), is accepting Statements of Interest (SOI) for its eleventh round of funding. The closing date for submissions is March 14, 2007. SDTC encourages the submission of technology solutions designed to improve sustainability for all Canadian economic sectors including energy exploration and production, power generation, energy utilization, transportation, agriculture, forestry, and waste management. SDTC actively seeks applications for technology innovations that deliver clean water, clean soil, clean air, and a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Applications may be made online on the SDTC website.

Call for Witnesses: Senate Environment Committee Witnesses Needed |

The Senate environment committee will be resuming its Review of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA 1999) in February. The committee will discuss perfluorinated carboxylic acids (PFCAs) as it relates to CEPA. Energy Future Report Consultations |
|
|
The National Energy Board (NEB) periodically publishes a long-term energy outlook for energy supply and demand in Canada. Their next Energy Futures Report, scheduled for release in Fall 2007, will provide an outlook to 2030. Key objectives of the report are to provide a comprehensive analysis of the Canadian energy market and to provide a framework for public discussion on emerging issues and trends. ENGOs are invited to the NEB’s cross-Canada consultations (February 26 to March 14) with a wide cross-section of energy industry, government and NGOs as part of the second phase of report production. CFIA Public Workshops on Fertilizer Program Modernization |

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is hosting a series of one-day regional public workshops on Fertilizer Program Modernization across the country, from February 6 to March 6, 2007. The objectives of these workshops are to improve understanding of the current Fertilizer Program and to actively engage stakeholders in the Fertilizer Program review and re-design process. The input and advice will contribute to the on-going refinement of the Strategic Action Plan for the Fertilizer Program, leading to a national workshop planned for March in Ottawa. Conference on International Process and Technology Innovations for Effective Waste Management |

The Air & Waste Management Association (AWMA) will be holding a conference on International Process and Technology Innovations for Effective Waste Management from February 5th to 7th, 2007 at the Toronto Airport Hilton, Mississauga, Ontario. The conference will focus on the many evolving approaches to municipal waste management. The conference will be of interest to municipal politicians, municipal technical staff, provincial regulatory personnel, technology providers, and consulting companies. As a member of Evergreen's executive management team and reporting to the Executive Director, the Director will lead a team of six communications, design, and PR professionals and develop a long term vision and strategic direction for Evergreen’s marketing function.
