Teleconference Consultation on Options for an International Instrument for Sustainable Forest Management |
| |
The Canadian Environmental Network (RCEN) is seeking five (5) delegates to participate in a national teleconference consultation and develop an ENGO position. The consultation and position paper will focus on the elements, mechanisms and ENGO recommendations for the different options for an international instrument on sustainable forest management at the global level. The teleconference consultation is scheduled for March 9, 2007 (TBC) and could last up to 4 hours (including a break). All selected participants will receive $500 for one day of preparation and $500 for participation in the teleconference. The deadline to apply is Friday, March 2nd, 2007.

ENGOs are invited to sign on to an ENGO position paper calling for the withdrawal of Bill C-45, the proposed amendment to Canada’s Fisheries Act. The Parliamentary Review of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA 1999) is wrapping up. Please send your Senate submissions by February 28, 2007 as the Committee must present its report no later than March 31, 2007. Senate submissions should be sent to the Committee Clerk, Keli Hogan. Toronto Tree Tours Program Launch |
|
|
Toronto Tree Tours will officially launch its tree tour program in May 2007 with an interactive community website. The site will be a community-driven scrapbook and discussion-board of Toronto’s trees. The site will record each tour of a Toronto neighborhood's trees as part of the story of the overall urban forest canopy. Each tour represented on the site may be curated to include the work of artists while also detailing the efforts of local activists and community residents in stewarding their community's environmental health. Toronto Tree Tours are also looking for volunteers to help research and write these tours as well as to photograph the stops on their walks.

Report and Maps on Industrial-Caused Changes to the Pascagama Site of Québec's Boreal Forest Now Available |

Global Forest Watch Canada (GFWC) has released the summary results of an up-to-date survey of human disturbances in the Pascagama region of the Boreal region in Québec, which reveals many recent impacts caused by logging and associated roads. The study was undertaken using satellite imagery over the period of 1990 to 2006. To view the news release, or to download the report and associated maps, visit the GFWC. |

Sierra Club of Canada’s Kyoto Report Card |
|
To commemerate the 2nd anniversary of the Kyoto Protocol’s entry into force, the Sierra Club of Canada (SCC) has released its fourth report on the implementation of the Kyoto Protocol in Canada, the Kyoto Report Card. ENGOs and individuals are invited to read the report card, which includes a vision for a low-carbon Canada of 2013 and 2030, a review of 2006, and more. SCC’s Kyoto Report Card also reviews Canada's record in meeting the objectives of the Kyoto Protocol and examines federal government progress in meeting targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Call for Comments: 2-Butoxyethanol Regulations |
|
|
The final 2-Butoxyethanol Regulations were published in the Canada Gazette, Part II, on December 27, 2006. On July 9, 2005, the proposed 2-Butoxyethanol Regulations under the title Regulations Respecting 2-Butoxyethanol were published in the Canada Gazette, followed by a 60-day comment period. Comments received were taken into consideration during the finalization of the Regulations. The risk management strategy for this substance is currently posted on Environment Canada’s Management of Toxic Substances website. An Environmental Performance Agreement has been developed, as a complementary control measure and will be implemented concurrently with the Regulations. National Environmental Education Conference |

The Canadian Network for Environmental Education and Communication, the Alberta Council for Environmental Education and the Global Environmental and Outdoor Education Council of the Alberta Teachers Association are organizing a national environmental education conference entitled "Trails to Sustainability" on May 24-27 in
Kananaskis, Alberta. The event, designed for all teachers and educators, will help to learn more about the many 'trails' to environmental stewardship and a vibrant society and economy. Ottawa University Lecture on the Up and Down Sides of Mining |

The Ottawa University Institute of Environment, University of Ottawa, has launched its 2006-07 Lecture Series: "Elemental Environmentalism: Water, Air, Fire and Earth."
A lecture and debate on the Earth portion, with a theme on “What is Mining All About? The Up and Down Sides” will take place at the Fauteux Hall at Ottawa University on February 28, 2007 at 5:00pm.

Communications & Outreach Coordinator (Parental Leave Posting), MiningWatch Canada |

MiningWatch Canada, a small Ottawa-based non-profit organisation, is looking for a temporary replacement for their Communications and Outreach Coordinator (also responsible for the Latin America and Africa programs). The contract will be from May 1 to August 31, 2007; the total contract amount will be negotiable (based on experience an qualifications) but not less than $10,000 including GST. Responsibilities are divided into two main areas - Communications and Research. Qualifications include familiarity with at least some aspects of the mining industry and its impacts (social, economic, cultural, environmental) in Canada and internationally, and a commitment to social and environmental justice.
