Seventh Session of the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF7) |
| |
The Canadian Environmental Network (RCEN) has been invited to nominate one (1) ENGO representative for the official Canadian Delegation to the Seventh Session of the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF7) to be held in New York, New York from 16-27 April 2007. Natural Resources Canada will cover the delegate’s costs related to travel, accommodations, meals and incidentals as per Treasury Board Guidelines. Fifteenth Session of the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD-15) |
| |
The RCEN is seeking one (1) ENGO and one (1) youth delegate to attend the Fifteenth Session of the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD-15). This meeting is scheduled to take place from April 30-May 11, 2007 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. CSD-15 will be a policy, or negotiation year of the second implementation cycle and will continue its focus on the following areas: Energy for Sustainable Development; Industrial Development; Air pollution/ Atmosphere; and Climate Change. Organizing Committee, ENGO-DFO Joint Workshop on the Role of Science in Habitat Management |
|
The Canadian Environmental Network (RCEN) is seeking two (2) delegates to participate in the Organizing Committee for a joint ENGO-DFO Workshop on the Role of Science in Habitat Management. The two-day workshop will be held in 2007. The Organizing Committee will consider workshop location, budget, date, numbers, etc., and will develop a proposal with a budget for submission to DFO.
Note: This call is only to select ENGO members for the organizing committee. A call for workshop participants will be put out at a later date specifying delegate expenses covered for attending the workshop. If you are interested in participating, visit the RCEN website.

Nature Canada is inviting ENGOs and individuals to sign a petition to ask the government to protect our environment from the effects of global warming due to climate change and tell Environment Minister John Baird that Canada’s Government must set absolute emissions targets on the biggest industrial polluters.

Members of civil society are invited to participate in a consultation meeting on March 14, 2007 at the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada in Ottawa with Federal government officials to assist in developing a Canadian position for the Fifteenth Session of the United Nations Commission for Sustainable Development (CSD-15), to be held in New York from April 30 to May 11, 2007. In preparation for CSD-15, the Commission is hosting an Intergovernmental Preparatory Meeting in New York from February 26 to March 2. The outcome of this meeting will be a brief negotiating document that will form the basis of discussion at the CSD-15 session, available on the CSD website.

Nature Québec / UQCN, the Réseau québécois des groupes écologistes (RQGE) and the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS) are partners in the Aux arbres citoyens ! Initiative. Aux arbres citoyens !’s goal is the boreal forest protection and the urgent need to create an authentic protected areas network in Quebec to be placed on the agenda. Aux Arbres citoyens ! is inviting all constituents to engage in action through the following four resources: 1) Voice yourself using our tool and write to your candidates (French only); 2) Attend public discussions and ask questions to your candidates ; 3) Learn more about the main political parties’ positions ; and 4) Learn more about the commitments required by the Aux arbres citoyens ! UN-NGLS Launches New Publication: The Unfinished Story of Women and the United Nations |
| |
To help commemorate International Women’s Day, March 8, 2007, UN-NGLS has launched a publication, The Unfinished Story of Women and the United Nations, which covers more than eighty-five years of history between women and inter-governmental organizations. This book recalls the success story of women and the League of Nations and describes the unfolding history of women at the UN for the advancement and empowerment of women, especially in the 30 years since the First UN World Conference on Women in 1975 in Mexico City and up to the ten-year review and appraisal of the implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action in 2005. Chapter five specifically explores the issue of ‘Women for a Healthy Planet’. The publication is also available online. |

Call for Participation : ENGO teleconference for the Environmental Assessment Working Group (EAWG) for substances under the Food & Drugs Act |

The EAWG will be meeting in Ottawa on March 26-28, 2007. The teleconference on the March 13 at 3:00pm ET will give the RCEN delegates a chance to discuss items for the agenda and to gather input from other ENGOs in preparation for the Ottawa meeting. The EAWG’s mandate is to provide broad strategic advice on policy, technical, operational and regulatory issues regarding the development of appropriate regulations for the assessment and notification of new substances contained in products regulated under the Food & Drugs Act. Call for applications: Canadian Awards for International Cooperation |
|

For fourteen years, the Canadian Awards for International Cooperation have recognized the achievements of Canadian businesses and organizations in supporting sustainable economic growth and social programs to reduce poverty in the developing countries of Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as in the countries in transition in Central and Eastern Europe. The awards will be presented as part of the International Development Days program to be held from May 22 – 24, 2007 in Fredericton, New Brunswick. The deadline for applications is April 17, 2007. Green Revolution “Whose Revolution?” Public Forum |

|
A public forum to explore the question of whether industrial agriculture and genetic engineering will benefit African farmers, is taking place on March 26, 2007 in Ottawa, Ontario. The forum will also discuss the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Rockefellers’ launch of a new "Green Revolution" in Africa, a $US150 million initiative intended to spur agricultural development in Africa. Questions explored will include what the initiative means for Africa's farmers, food security, and biodiversity; who will benefit and who will lose with this new agricultural revolution; if industrial agriculture and GMOs are the solution to hunger and poverty in Africa; and if there a better way. Part of a team, the National Caucus Coordinator, reporting to the Executive Director, is responsible for facilitating specific national caucuses, implementing and coordinating delegate selections, negotiating and implementing contracts, and ensuring an effective role for RCEN in consultative processes between the federal government and environmental groups. Excellent writing and verbal skills in both English and French are mandatory. The deadline to apply is April 2, 2007.

The Ottawa Valley (OV) Chapter of the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS) is seeking a dynamic, self-starting, bi-lingual individual, with a passion for wilderness and the CPAWS mission, to manage its operations and help deliver its conservation campaigns. Reporting to the OV chapter board of directors, the full-time, bilingual executive director will work with campaign managers and the board to fulfill the chapter's conservation mission, with a main focus on the campaign for protection in the Dumoine watershed of western Quebec.
