14th Regular Session of the Commission for Environmental Cooperation Council |
| |
The RCEN is seeking one (1) ENGO representative to attend the 14th Regular Session of the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) Council and other concurrent events to be held from June 26-27, 2007 in Morelia, Michoacan, Mexico. During this session, the Council will consider a program of action to address environmental issues facing North America. Funding for travel and accommodation for this meeting will be confirmed by May 25, 2007. Should funding be approved, CEC will cover the cost of travel and accommodation, but not for the time spent at the meeting nor for any preparation time. The deadline to apply is May 28, 2007. 2nd Meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Working Group on Review of Implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity |

The RCEN is seeking one (1) ENGO representative to be part of the Canadian Delegation at the 2nd Meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Working Group on Review of Implementation (WGRI-2) of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), to be held in Paris, France, on July 9-13, 2007. Information about WGRI-2 including the provisional agenda and official documents can be found on the CBD Website. Environment Canada will reimburse the travel and accommodation expenses for the selected representative but will not cover any costs for the time spent at the meeting nor for any preparation time spent prior to the meeting. Sierra Club of Canada is urging individuals and ENGOs to sign a petition to ask Prime Minister Harper to implement the Kyoto Protocol and do something about climate change. You can add your name to the list of Canadians telling Prime Minister Harper they care, by signing the greenhouse gas petition.

Webpage Launched: RCEN 2007 Conference on Environment and Health |

Information on the RCEN 2007 Annual Conference on the Environment and Annual General Meeting is now available on the RCEN website.The Conference and AGM will take place on November 1-4, 2007 in Ottawa. The specific theme of this year’s 30th anniversary conference will be Environment and Health. Additional information on the Conference, including the agenda and exact location, will be added to the Conference webpage as it becomes available.
Note: Currently, funding to attend the Conference is available for National Council and Regional Affiliate members only. Further funding details for all other RCEN members, will be made available in the coming months. Though the Conference is intended primarily for RCEN members, certain sessions will be open to the general public (a registration fee will apply).

New Earthscan Publication on Managing Protected Areas |

Earthscan have launched a new publication entitled Managing Protected Areas: A Global Guide. Managing Protected Areas is an authoritative handbook produced by IUCN, that spans the full terrain of protected area management and is an international benchmark for all professionals, students and academics worldwide. The book employs dozens of detailed international cases studies, hundreds of concise maps, and evaluation tools, checklists and numerous appendices to cover all aspects of park management from biodiversity to natural heritage to financial management. Review copies are available for those who would like to consider publishing a review / feature / extract / poster / author interview.

Call for Participation: ENGO Teleconference for Consultations on the Regulatory Framework for Air Emissions |

The Government of Canada is currently undertaking stakeholder consultations on its new Regulatory Framework for Air Emissions. The RCEN has been invited to select a total of thirty (30) ENGO representatives for three upcoming meetings in May and June, 2007 (please see the Call for Delegates on the RCEN website). In order to prepare for these meetings, the RCEN will hold an ENGO teleconference on Tuesday, May 29 at 2 PM ET. This call will be open to all interested ENGOs, including (but not limited to) those who have applied to any of the three upcoming consultations. All applicants to the consultations are strongly encouraged to participate on this call.
Please confirm your attendance on this call by replying to Leela via e-mail by Monday, May 28. Call-in details will be sent out Tuesday morning, May 29. |

Call for Interest: Consultations on the Risk Management of Mercury-containing Products |
|
|
Environment Canada is seeking expressions of interest regarding attendance at stakeholder consultation sessions planned for Fall 2007. On December 20, 2006, Environment Canada published a Risk Management Strategy for Mercury-containing Products (RMS). Currently the RMS can be accessed on Environment Canada’s website. The development of the proposed instruments is scheduled to begin in the fall 2007. The intent of the Fall consultations will be to consult on a discussion document that will identify the intent of the proposed instruments. ENGOs are invited to participate in the survey by contacting Elise Legault via e-mail to obtain the survey form. The survey should be returned to Ms. Legault by June 8, 2007. |

Clean Air Day on June 6th, 2007 |
|

Transport 2000 Québec, an association whose mission is to champion and advocate public transit, is organizing the twelfth edition of the Clean Air Day Awareness Campaign, on June, 6th 2007. The theme of this event is: Together, Let’s Fix the Modal Imbalance! Transport 2000 is encouraging you to travel by bus, by subway or by train on June 6th, or to use car pooling, biking, roller-skating ... or simply, to walk. In addition, everyone is invited to sign the petition to require federal/provincial governments and municipalities to pool massive investments in public transportation and active transportation.

Canadian Environment Week |

ENGOs are invited to be part of the Canadian Environment Week (CEW), taking place from June 3-9, 2007, to help promote and celebrate community action for the environment. Activities are being planned to encourage Canadians to take action, and to celebrate local successes. Environment Canada (EC) is inviting ENGOs to post their events on their Community Action Board for others to see and participate. EC will post all events received. ENGOs may also inform EC if they would like a CEW button to place on their website.

Education Project Coordinator, Sierra Club of Canada – Atlantic Canada Chapter |

Sierra Club of Canada - Atlantic Canada Chapter is looking to fill an Education Project Coordinator position. The successful candidate would help coordinate, develop and pilot a large-scale project called One Foot Forward: An Eco-footprint Project into its first year. This position also requires someone who has fundraising experience and loves to work with people. This position reports directly to the Chapter director and also works with a volunteer advisory committee. The deadline to apply is May 31, 2007.
