Calls For Delegates

 
i.
2nd Meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Working Group on Review of Implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity
 

The RCEN is seeking one (1) ENGO representative to be part of the Canadian Delegation at the 2nd Meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Working Group on Review of Implementation (WGRI-2) of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), to be held in Paris, France, on July 9-13, 2007. Information about WGRI-2 including the provisional agenda and official documents can be found on the CBD Website. Environment Canada will reimburse the travel and accommodation expenses for the selected representative but will not cover any costs for the time spent at the meeting nor for any preparation time spent prior to the meeting. The deadline to apply is June 12, 2007. If you are interested in participating, visit the RCEN website.

Environmental Defense Campaign: Speak Up for the Greenbelt

 

Environmental Defense and their partners in the Ontario Greenbelt Alliance are inviting ENGOs and individuals to help protect Ontario’s 1.8 million acre Greenbelt, a large area of green space, farmland and environmentally-sensitive land. According to Environmental Defense, “gravel pits and urban development continue to threaten the Greenbelt.” Interested individuals can take various actions now to help permanently protect the Greenbelt, and can stay informed with the latest news from the Greenbelt campaign by signing up for the Greenbelt Watch e-newsletter.

CPAWS Big Wild Challenge

 

CPAWS and Mountain Equipment Co-op are piloting a new wilderness protection initiative, the Big Wild Challenge, and are inviting individuals to try it out. Interested individuals and groups can create their own webpage, raise funds for CPAWS and share their trip experiences with others, to help support wilderness protection.
To be among the first to join this exciting new venture, which will be launched publically in 2008, register on the Big Wild Challenge website.

Update on National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy

 

The National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy (NRTEE) traveled to nine Canadian cities last fall to promote awareness of and gather feedback on its Advice on a Long-term Strategy on Energy and Climate Change for Canada, released in June 2006. By identifying and modeling 31 greenhouse gas reduction wedges that correspond to existing technologies or strategies, the advisory note presents a scenario for reducing GHG emissions by 60 percent by the year 2050.

Canadian Environment Awards Announces Winners for 2007

 

The Canadian Environment Awards hosted a gala evening on June 4, 2007 at the Montréal Science Centre to recognize the 2007 winners of its annual celebration of environmental achievement. One of Canadian Environment Week’s major events, the Canadian Environment Awards celebrates the commitment of Canadians who are helping to protect, preserve and restore the country’s environment. Photographs of the Canadian Environment Awards 2007 gala and profiles of each of this year’s winners are available on the Canadian Geographic website.

Canadian Biotechnology Advisory Committee 2006 Annual Report
 

The Canadian Biotechnology Advisory Committee (CBAC) has released its Annual Report for 2006. The report describes CBAC’s program of work and highlights the Committee’s recommendations to the federal government on current policy issues associated with biotechnology.

New Report on Royal Dutch Shell Acquisition of Shell Canada
 

One Sky has released a new report on Royal Dutch Shell Acquisition of Shell Canada, When Gas Explodes. Given One Sky’s experience in the Niger Delta region, our working knowledge of Northern B.C. and their unique understanding of these two contexts, they have produced this report, which includes recommendations for avoiding resource conflict in a potentially explosive region of Northern B.C.

Call for Participation: Environmental Youth Video Production Camp

 

Planet in Focus is inviting all youth interested in film and video, and who are passionate about the environment, to participate in a two-week summer hands-on workshop to learn how to create, shoot and edit an environmentally themed video. The workshop will take place on August 13-24, 2007 in Toronto, Ontario. The workshop fee is $100 for the entire two weeks, and financial aid is available according to need. All videos will screen at the Green Sprouts Youth Filmmakers’ Showcase.

Call for Comments: Draft Follow-Up Assessment Report and Notice of Intent to Apply the Significant New Activity Provisions of CEPA 1999 and the Draft Environmental Performance Agreement

 

The public has been invited to submit written observations to the Minister of the Environment by June 20, 2007 regarding the draft follow-up assessment report on Organotins and a notice to apply the significant new activity (SNAc) provisions of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 (CEPA 1999). In addition, a draft environmental performance agreement (EPA) on some organotins has been released for comments prior to being finalized. Public consultations on the assessment report and on the EPA are currently announced on the Chemicals Portal. The draft report on organotins and the notice to apply the SNAc provisions are available on Environment Canada’s website.

International Community Forestry Workshop, An Official Side-Event to the International Congress – Global Vision of Forestry in the 21st Century

 

The RCEN Forest Caucus is organizing anInternational Community Forestry Workshop on Sunday, September 30th 2007 as an official side-event directly preceding the University of Toronto - Faculty of Forestry Congress: A Global Vision of Forestry in the 21st Century. The Workshop will draw on the active participation of the RCEN Forest Caucus members as well as the British Columbia Community Forest Association (BCCFA), the Global Caucus on Community Based Forest Management (GCCBFM) and other delegates from community forestry NGOs in order to develop a Plan of Action for community forestry. The Workshop organizing committee is also seeking greater participation in the form of a call for abstracts for presentations on community forestry research and experiences (extended deadline for presentation abstracts is June 17, 2007).

Conference on Greenhouse Gases: Mitigation and Utilization

 

CHEMRAWN (Chemical Research Applied to World Needs) and ICCDU (the International Conferences on Carbon Dioxide Utilization) will hold a combined conference in Kingston on science and policy related to mitigation and utilization of CO2 and other greenhouse gases on July 8-12, 2007 in Kingston, Ontario. The meeting, hosted by the Department of Chemistry at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, is being held 6 months before the Kyoto-protocol commitment period begins. Scientists, engineers and industrial or governmental policymakers are invited to participate.
