Calls For Delegates

ENGO Participation to the Energy Sector Sustainability Table
 

Environment Canada has asked the RCEN to select one (1) ENGO representative for the Energy Sector Sustainability Table (ESST). The selected ENGO representative will be expected to attend the next ESST meeting, to be held July 13, 2007 in Toronto, as well as regular subsequent meetings (date and location to be determined). The selected delegate will receive $500 per day of preparation and $500 per day of meeting, based on a 2:1 formula (i.e. a one-day meeting would expect two days of preparation). Moreover, travel, accommodation and meals for meetings will be covered as per Treasury Board Guidelines. The deadline to apply is June 29, 2007. Send Letter to Minister to Request an Environmental Assessment of the Irving Oil Refinery Project

 

Sierra Club of Canada is inviting ENGOs to write to Honourable John Baird, Minister of Environment, to ask that he order a full environmental impact assessment of the proposed oil refinery with a panel review of the Irving Oil Refinery Project in Saint-John, New Brunswick. According to the Sierra Club of Canada website, “This is the first oil refinery to be built in North America in more than 25 years, making it the first refinery to be subject to any kind of environmental assessment and the first refinery to be built since Canada ratified the Kyoto Protocol in 2002.” The deadline to submit your letter is June 30, 2007.

Recycling is fun ! 2007 Eco-Design Contest

 

Individuals are invited to participate in the ALCOA 2007 Eco-Design Contest, « Recycler, c’est le fun ! ». The goal of this contest is to promote aluminum recycling using creativity as a communication tool. The idea is to motivate people to recycle more while also having fun, and create a communication tool that relays the idea that Recycling is fun!

Father’s Day Report on Men, Boys and Environmental Health Threats
 

The Canadian Partnership for Children's Health and Environment has released a new report entitled A Father's Day Report – Men, Boys and Environmental Health Threats. The report summarizes the evidence about environmental risks to boys, and discusses how fathers and all members of society can take action to reduce or prevent environmental or occupational exposures that can affect a fetus or child. The full 16-page report and 4-page summary are on linked to a media release on the front page of the CPCHE website.

Webcast Recording Now Available Online
 

Pollution Probe, in partnership with Environmental Defense (US), has released a major new report on industrial chemicals policies "Not That Innocent: A Comparative Analysis of Canadian, European Union and United States Policies on Industrial Chemicals". Author Dr. Richard Denison of Environmental Defense (US) did a webcast on the report on May 24, 2007.  A recording was made of this webcast, which is now available on the Environmental Defense website. The report provides a comprehensive comparison of the European Union's new REACH regulation with existing policies in the United States and Canada that govern industrial chemicals.

Call for Submissions: Suggestions for Speakers at the 2007 RCEN Conference on the Environment

 

The RCEN Conference Planning Committee is seeking your suggestions for the keynote address at the RCEN’s 30th Anniversary Gala, as part of this year’s Conference on the Environment and Health to be held November 3, 2007 in Ottawa. The Gala will highlight the RCEN’s contribution to the protection of the environment, as well as the various achievements of the environmental movement in Canada, over the past thirty years.  To suggest a speaker, please e-mail the following information to Claire Sales, RCEN Events Administrator, by July 3, 2007: speaker’s full name, organization, contact information and a brief overview of how this speaker’s work relates to the topic of the Gala. Please take into account the conference’s limited budget for travel and speaking fees.

Sixtieth Annual Conference on Climate Change for NGOs associated with the United Nations

 

All NGOs associated with the United Nations Department of Public Information or in consultative status with ECOSOC are invited to attend and participate to the Sixtieth Annual Conference for NGOs associated with the UN DPI, to be held in New York on September 5-7 2007. As the RCEN has consultative status with ECOSOC, RCEN members are invited to participate to the conference. The theme of this year’s conference is Climate Change: How it Impacts Us All. Please note that there is a limit of 5 participants from any one organization. All participants are required to pre-register for the Conference. The deadline to apply is August 1, 2007.

Online Consultation on the United Nationas Decade of Education for Sustainable Development

 

An online consultation about the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD) 2005-2014 is currently underway. The exchange of innovative projects and ideas, in English and French will continue until 30 June 2007. Many countries have mobilized for the UN DESD since its launch in 2005. This online consultation will help to prepare an assessment of the progress and achievements on the first two years of the DESD. UNESCO invites members of education communities worldwide to participate in its online discussion forums on this and other education themes. Coordinator of Programming & Volunteer Support, Waterloo Public Interest Research Group

 

The Waterloo Public Interest Research Group (WPIRG), a student funded and directed organization that provides support for students to research, educate, and take action on environmental and social justice issues, is currently seeking a Coordinator of Programming and Volunteer Support. This is a permanent full time position with a 6 month probationary period; 40 hours per week at a rate of $18.42 per hour, with extended benefits. The work of the Coordinator falls into two categories: 1) to directly support the activism of volunteers, and 2) to organize events. Deadline for Submissions is Monday July 16, 2007 at 10:00am.
