Calls For Delegates

National Orphaned/Abandoned Mines Advisory Committee Meeting

 

Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) has invited the RCEN to select one (1) ENGO delegate to attend a National Orphaned/ Abandoned Mines Advisory Committee Meeting in Whistler, BC on Saturday, September 22, 2007. This meeting will be held in advance of the 2007 Energy and Mines Ministers’ Conference to be held in Whistler from September 23 through 26, 2007. The Advisory Committee studies various issues and initiatives relating to the development of partnerships in the implementation of remediation programs across Canada. Funding is available from NRCan to cover travel, accommodation, meals and incidentals. Per diem rates are $250. The deadline to apply is Monday, August 27, 2007. Environmental Code of Practice for Metal Mining Consultation

 

Environment Canada (EC) has invited the RCEN to select four (4) ENGO delegates to attend the Environmental Code of Practice for Metal Mining Consultation in Ottawa, ON, in mid-late Fall, 2007 (Date TBC).   The purpose of this meeting is to obtain input on the draft Code of Practice with the aim of finalizing the Code for publication by mid-2008.

Funding available to attend this meeting covers travel, accommodation, meals and incidentals.  Per diems and preparatory work will also be paid.

RCEN Thank You

The RCEN sincerely thanks Environment Canada for renewing their funding this year. This support enables the RCEN to continue its non-partisan and collaborative work, facilitating communication between Environment Canada and Environmental NGOS for 30 years.

The RCEN would also like to thank all of its member organizations, volunteers and supporters for their efforts in July 2007. Your letters, calls and energy were instrumental in reaffirming the RCEN’s invaluable communication link to environmental groups across Canada. The National Office looks forward to continuing its work in support of yours.

Summer Schedule for RCEN E-Bulletin - August 2007

The RCEN would like to inform its E-Bulletin subscribers that this is an interim edition of the E-bulletin. Until our new Communication Coordinator is in place, the RCEN E-Bulletin will focus on Calls for Delegates and Action Alerts, and may not be available every week.

The Health and Environment Awareness Project, an initiative of Breast Cancer Action Montreal (BCAM) and The McGill Centre for Research and Teaching on Women, works to raise awareness about how pollution in our environment affects the risk for breast cancer and other health problems. They have published four brochures for nation-wide circulation:

Report on Area Sensitive Forest Birds in Urban Areas – August 2007

 

Environment Canada’s Canadian Wildlife Service, Ontario is pleased to announce the release of Area Sensitive Forest Birds in Urban Areas, a free online report that identifies key urban stressors contributing to an estimated loss of over half of the forest bird species diversity in the Greater Toronto Area.

This report is ideal for urban planners, consultants and environmental professionals as it provides eight practical habitat enhancement and mitigation techniques, and identifies landscape level actions required to prevent further species decline.

Survey of NPRI Data Users

 

There are only a few weeks left to complete Environment Canada's (EC) survey regarding the Nation Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI) program. Environment Canada has hired EKOS Research Associates, an independent research consultant, to conduct an online survey regarding the NPRI program.  EKOS Research Associates is responsible for all collection and analysis of the data.  The survey will provide information on issues and key factors affecting the program, as well as related challenges and opportunities. EC will use the results to improve the reporting requirements and process.
