SESSION TWO:

- Michelle
- Working with Genevieve Marquis and Ann Janet on developing a national Strategy
- Consultation process across Canada
- Daylong consultation with teachers, industries, NGO, etc.
- Development of questionnaire is on the website and a hardcopy is also available (600 responses to date)
- The next step is to put together a draft document within the next eight months
- Hoping to have something on the table or at the very least an update by next CSD in the spring
- Would like to know what will be done and what possible rumors of what may possible happen
with this
- Concerned that a critical voice is needed which is not hooked up with industry
- In the government we have some earth lovers, perhaps, as a caucus, we could offer our services to Caccia and Kraft-Sloan – but where will this take us?
- Michelle
- This strategy is something we are aware of and not sure of where it will take us
- U.S. has EE strategy – Canada is one of the last of the last countries to have an EE strategy
- Funding is an important concern
- Ann Jarnet is an environmental educator explaining that the strategy is about values and in practical terms that people want to take stock. National Clearinghouse will also be an option. These are two of the possible practical outcomes
- Privatization of education is a problem
- It is unknown who will be on the committee and are some concerns of non-formal education which would likely mean some industry involvement
- Harvey
- Asked about provincial jurisdiction and to keep us in mind since we do provide networking tentacles in provinces
- All our caucuses are involved in education
- We seem to have a delivery system through our affiliates and are in need of some funding help from our friends
- In terms of implementation?
- Harvey
- We can’t depend on the provincial governments to speak out and educate people, e.g. the Alberta situation on climate change (government and industry)
- The underlying point is that we need to have something to offer
- Michelle
- In terms of implementation we won’t need to ask who could do this since it will already be done
and all we will have to do is support the existing infrastructure
- During the past three years $30,000,000 has been used to fund groups, education, etc.
A discussion on climate change also took place.
- Chantal
- What will be the next step after compiling the results?
- There is a part two of which consists to rush and get the strategy ready although unsure of who will be putting the draft strategy together
- Richard
- What is the relationship with "Learning for a Sustainable Future"
- Michelle
- EAEC director Jean Parent was part of the consultation and has been promoting the survey
- Richard
- Do you have any sense they will put any money into it?
- Michelle
- So far the cost has been low and Ann is starting to look for funds
- Not sure of where the money will from but do think there is an in the group that something will come our way
- Richard
- Is there any link to the Department of Health as there is more money there then the Department of Environment
- It looks good when the Minister sees a list of names
- Beatriz
- Good consultation strategy and great if the strategy works out although the feeling is that it will be up to us to push to make something happen
- Michelle
- Agree and it is a challenge to push the document as is, e.g. Environment Canada’s resistance to a values-base and education (say this isn’t science)
- Richard
- Potentially $20,000,000 for climate education over the next three years
- Can we link in consumption and energy issues
- What happens once the draft is done?
- Michelle
- Contact Ann J. about the outcome, everyone wants to be made aware of the outcome
- Richard
- Might be a good idea to set up a meeting (caucus chair, etc.) after with Anderson
- Beatriz
- There are already EE declarations, etc.
- Harvey
- We can provide it since we have a role to play
- Meeting with Ann and Genevieve – need to work with other groups who are doing the same
- Need to join together to make sure the strategy is of a critical perspective and push for it’s implementation
- Spoke about (alternative e.g. Earth snit ’92) EE declarations
Michelle invited people to call Ann or Genevieve if more information was needed.

Harvey Scott, Friends of the Athabasca, AB

- Angelica is also interested in being on steering committee with Harvey
- Spoke about doing conference calls using an inexpensive system – Bell "three-way calling"
- Harvey expressed that the lack of attendance at meetings doesn’t mean people are not interested (it’s the same problem as before – people are involved in other caucuses) although he does see a need for the education caucus
