Toxics Caucus
Mandate
Members of the RCEN Toxics Caucus work toward Pollution Prevention and the Precautionary Principle in regard to toxic substances. The issues in which the caucus members are involved are primarily related to the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA). These include the National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI), the Chemicals Management Plan (CMP), New Substances, and assessments of substances declared toxic under CEPA. Caucus members are also engaged in the Review of CEPA.

Other Projects and Activities
In partnership with Environmental Defence, the RCEN coordinates this research and outreach project to enhance civil society engagement in the Government of Canada’s Chemicals Management Plan (CMP). This project is open to all civil society stakeholders, including RCEN members as well as health, labour, consumer, youth and First Nations organizations. Please visit the project website for more information.
In partnership with the International POPs Elimination Network (IPEN), the RCEN hosted a meeting in January 2008 to plan the SAICM NGO Global Outreach Campaign. Toxics Caucus members participated at this meeting and continue to contribute to the Campaign through outreach and the development of educational materials (see Documents).
