Phase 2
Action Alert - Send a letter to the CEPA Ministers, your MPs and the Prime Minister to Include Concrete Commitments on the Regulation of Toxic Substances under CEPA in the Government’s Upcoming Environmental Announcements
On September 14, the federal government was required to “categorize” for dangerous properties the 23,000 substances on the Domestic Substances List (DSL). The results have not yet been released publicly. To encourage the government to make an announcement on an action plan for eliminating the most toxic substances the Canadian Environmental Law Association (CELA) is urging ENGOs to send letters to Canada’s Environment and Health Ministers and to the Prime Minister, re-emphasizing the points made in a September 15 letter from CELA: 1) the need for mandatory action and timelines for the elimination of the “worst chemicals first”; 2) substances on the DSL but not currently in use need to be assessed before their use is (re-)allowed in Canada ; 3) PBiTs and Health Canada’s top 100 placed on TSL, and the worst among them eliminated within one year; 4) assessment of the 500 highest-priority PiTs and BiTs assessed within two years, with a toxics use reduction plan in place within one further year, and implemented within two further years; and 5) the plan should be announced and launched by the end of September .
