Canadian Standards Association Development of a Standard for Hog Operations

"The CSA Technical Committee that represents a broad cross section of stakeholders across Canada has developed an environmental management systems standard specifically designed for hog operations. The formal public review period is underway now. It will close on November 18th of this year. Concurrent with the public review program CSA has implemented a pilot study. 15 farms across Canada are attempting to implement the draft standard. That pilot study…ends in March 2003. What CSA will then do is take the results from the public review period and the pilot study period and present those results back to our technical committee which is responsible for developing the standard. At that time the technical committee will finalize and approve the technical content of the standards after which CSA will publish them formally. [CSA] expect the standards to be published in mid-2003." —Kevin Boehmer-Canadian Standards Association

In 2001, the CEN was invited to oversee the selection of two ENGO delegates to participate in the CSA process attempting to develop a standard for hog operations. The process continues. The ENGO delegates are: Jerry Cook, Association for the Preservation of the Bouctouche Watershed; and Lobie Daughton, Regional Cooperative Development Centre. ENGO reporting on the process is available to members on request to Derek Stack.
