Consultation in Progress

Greenhouse Gas Reporting and the National Pollutant Release Inventory

There is currently no requirement for polluters to track greenhouse gas emissions through Canada's primary reporting mechanism, the National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI). Environment Canada and NRCan, in conjunction with the provinces of Ontario and Alberta, are hosting two workshops to explore ways to meet the full range of provincial, territorial, federal and stakeholder reporting needs while minimizing or eliminating duplication and reporting burden. These reporting needs include:

  • GHG information for specific provincial and territorial government requirements, including those of Alberta which is in the process of establishing a reporting regime, Ontario which already has a reporting system, and other interested jurisdictions;
  • GHG emissions information that will be required for the administration of Alberta's sector agreements as well as the proposed federal Large Industrial Emitters (LIE) covenants/regulatory backstop policy for GHG management in Canada;
  • enhancements to the National GHG Inventory;
  • andpublic accessibility to reported emission data.

Following the fall 2003 consultations in Calgary and Toronto:

The CEN, in cooperation with the Climate Action Network, and with capacity support provided by Environment Canadsa, oversaw the consolidation of ENGO views both in preparation and following consultation. The ENGO power point presentation is available for download, as is the Consolidated ENGO is available for download. The formal government report is also available.
