Rotterdam Convention on the Prior Informed Consent Procedure for Certain Hazardous Chemicals and Pesticides in International Trade

Where: Geneva, Switzerland

When: September 18 – 24, 2004

Number of Delegates: 1

Delegate Selection: The CEN delegate selection process has chosen Katie Albright of the Sierra Club of Canada to be part of the Canadian delegation to the Rotterdam Convention in Geneva, Switzerland.

The Eleventh meeting of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) and First Meeting of the Conference of Parties (COP) of the Rotterdam Convention are scheduled for September 18, 2004 and September 20 to 24, 2004, respectively, in Geneva, Switzerland.

In the past, the Canadian delegation to INC meetings has only included officials from various federal government departments. However, the Canadian delegation can also include representatives from provincial, territorial and aboriginal governments, industry and environmental non-government organizations. Environment Canada is inviting a representative from a Canadian ENGO to attend INC-11 and COP-1 as part of the Canadian delegation.

The proposed addition of chrysotile asbestos to the Prior Informed Consent Procedure of the Rotterdam Convention is of particular importance and ENGOs with interest and experience on this file are encouraged to attend.

Please note that participants of the Canadian delegation are required to sign a Canadian Delegation Advisor Participant Agreement which identifies responsibilities related to conduct and confidentiality. Travel and accommodation costs will be covered.
