MULTI-STAKEHOLDER ADVISORY GROUP

The selected four ENGO representatives for the Multi-stakeholder advisory group (MAG) to provide advice on the development of possible amendments to the MMER are:

The Minerals and Metals Branch of Environment Canada is forming a Multi-stakeholder advisory group (MAG) to provide advices on the development of possible amendments to the Metal Mining Effluent Regulations.

The proposed membership of the MMER MAG would be:

  • Federal Government: 5 (two from Environment Canada, one from Fisheries & Oceans Canada, one from INAC and one from Natural Resources Canada).
  • Provincial/territorial governments: one seat for each jurisdiction that expresses an interest.
  • Aboriginal organizations: based on interest.
  • Industry: 4
  • Public Interest: 4 (ENGOs).
  • Secretariat (Minerals and Metals Branch): 2

Commitments for the MAG members:

  • Commitment until at least December 2006.
  • MAG members would network with their constituents as they deem appropriate.
  • Participate at regular meetings of the MAG (e.g., every month or second month), would be via teleconference.
  • Participate at Face-to-face meetings of the MAG, would occur as deemed necessary but at least annually.

Environment Canada will reimburse, consistent with Treasury Board Guidelines, the travel and living expenses for all face-to-face meetings.

There is a possibility that the ENGO members get honorarium for their preparation and participation at the face-to-face meetings and also to write a report on ENGO’s perspectives on the amendments. However, we do not have any confirmation on this at the present time.

The text of the MMER is available on the Department of Justice website.
