ENGO participation in the Nanomaterials Regulatory Framework Multi-Stakeholder Workshop
When: Thursday, September 27, 2007
Where: Toronto, ON
Number of ENGO Delegates selected: 2
The RCEN selected two ENGO delegates for the Environment Canada / Health Canada multi-stakeholder workshop regarding a Proposed Regulatory Framework for Nanomaterials under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999. The purpose of the stakeholder workshop was to gather comments on the suggested approach in order to develop a regulatory framework. At the workshop, comments were gathered from participating stakeholders through discussion groups and plenary sessions. All stakeholders were invited to provide additional comments in writing in the weeks following the meeting. See below for a list of selected delegates.

Background Information
Nanotechnology is the manipulation and structuring of matter at the nanometer scale (typically 1-100 nm) to create materials, devices, and systems with novel properties and functions. Nanotechnology and the use of nanomaterials are high growth fields with potential applications across many sectors. Nanomaterials are utilized to enhance manufacturing processes and existing products as well as develop a wide range of new products. Although this technology and associated products are anticipated to provide societal benefits, the Federal Government must set in place a regulatory framework to ensure that nanomaterials do not present new risks to human health and the environment.
