Notice of Intent to amend the Phosphorus Concentration Regulations

A Notice of Intent to amend the Phosphorus Concentration Regulations was published on February 16, 2008 in Canada Gazette Part 1. The objective of the proposed Amendments is to contribute to the reduction of phosphorus being released into Canada’s aquatic ecosystems.

The proposed Amendments to the Phosphorus Concentration Regulations would lower the limits of phosphorus concentration in laundry detergent from 2.2% (by weight) to 0.5%, introduce limits to the concentration of phosphorus in dishwasher detergents of 0.5% and introduce limits to the concentration of phosphorus in household general purpose cleaners of 0.5%, where appropriate. It is expected that the proposed Amendments would come into force by 2010.

All comments and advice are welcome by the April 16, 2008 deadline set out in the Notice of Intent.
