Orphaned and Abandoned Mines: A Workshop to Explore Best Practices” under the National Orphaned Abandoned Mines Initiative (NOAMI)
The RCEN selected 8 to 10 delegates to participate in a workshop sponsored by the NOAMI secretariat entitled, “Orphaned and Abandoned Mines: A Workshop to Explore Best Practices”, which was held October 26-27, 2006, in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Selected Delegates:
The workshop was designed “to explore and understand the best, emerging and innovative practices relating to the management of orphaned and abandoned mines.” Based on a “lessons learned” approach, the workshop tackled the issues head-on through a series of themes that highlight current best practices in both Canada and internationally.
Presentations by experts, case studies, panel discussions etc. were clustered around themes such as:
- Setting Priorities – site assessment, risk/hazard assessment, monitoring, reclamation
- Public Engagement and Capacity Building – community and Aboriginal involvement, including consultation, monitoring and decision-making
- Partnership Approaches – funding option, regulatory structures, opportunities for collaboration
- Applying Best Practices – bringing it all together
