Call for Input

Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)

Dear friends,

We would like to obtain your comments on a draft response to a questionnaire concerning the sustainable management and use of forest biological diversity in Canada.

The Secretariat of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has invited Parties to the Convention to provide information about how they manage and use forest biological diversity. The Secretariat will compile information received from Parties to prepare a report on relevant activities under the Programme of Work on Forest Biological Diversity.

The International Affairs Division of the Canadian Forest Service (CFS), Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), has developed a first draft for your consideration. Once finalized, this document will be submitted as Canada's contribution to the CBD Secretariat's Report on the Management of Forest Biological Diversity, Sustainable Use to Derive Products and Services, and Benefit-Sharing.

We have been invited to provide information on the following issues:

  • sustainable use of forest biodiversity goods and services
  • sustainable management of forests
  • related indigenous and local communities involvement
  • related planning and modelling tools
  • related criteria and indicators
  • economic valuation of forest biodiversity goods and services
  • monitoring of unsustainable uses of forest biodiversity, and
  • needs of future generations with regards to forests.

This first draft is based primarily on two existing publications — both having been subject to broad stakeholder review:

  1. National Report on the Third Session of the United Nations Forum on Forest, prepared by the International Affairs Division, CFS, NRCan, March 2003;
  2. Canada's Forest Biodiversity: A decade of progress in sustainable management, prepared by the Science Branch, CFS, NRCan, 2002.

For ease of reference, we have highlighted the sections requiring your attention. Most of the information found in these sections was obtained through Web site searches. We invite you to update and/or modify and include additional information as you see fit. Please note that your comments on other sections are welcome as well.

Please forward your comments on the biodiversity questionnaire by May 16th to Francine Dumont;
8th floor, 580 Booth Street, Ottawa, Ont. K1A 0E4;
fax (613) 947-9033.
Don't hesitate to call Francine at (613) 947-7379 if you have any questions.

Yours sincerely,

Jacques Carette
