Call for Nominations

RCEN Mining Caucus Steering Committee

The RCEN is currently conducting a Call for Nominations for membership on the Mining Caucus Steering Committee. This is an excellent opportunity for you to be part of Caucus decision-making and the planning of activities! This call is open to all RCEN members who belong to, or are willing to join the Mining Caucus, including current Steering Committee members.

The deadline to apply is Wednesday, May 7. Interested members can apply by completing the online application form. Under “name of consultation”, please indicate Mining Caucus Steering Committee.

When all nominations have been received, the list of nominees will be circulated to all Caucus members for review. Should there be more than 8 nominees, Caucus members will elect their Steering Committee members by email ballot.

This year, the RCEN is implementing staggered terms for membership on all National Caucus Steering Committees. This will ensure continuity on Steering Committees while also providing an opportunity for new members to get involved. Once the membership of the Steering Committee is confirmed, members will select a Chair or co-Chairs, and will volunteer for either 1 or 2 year terms in order to set up the staggered terms. Half of the positions on a Steering Committee will be up for re-election in a given year, with all future terms for 2 years. All members are eligible to reapply when their term comes up for renewal.

Before applying to be on the Mining Caucus Steering Committee, please read the RCEN National Caucus Policy on Steering Committees and the Rights and Responsibilities of Caucus Steering Committee Members, as outlined below.

Steering Committee Responsibilities (from RCEN National Caucus Policy Manual):

Caucus activities are overseen by Steering Committees comprised of no more than 8 RCEN group members in any one caucus. Steering Committees’ representative base should include a minimum of four members of different regions in Canada. Elected via a Caucus e-mail voting system, Steering Committee members serve a two year work term that can be renewed indefinitely, if they are re-elected. Steering committees are responsible to:

  • Oversee the development and implementation of caucus projects and programs
  • Select delegates for consultations
  • Elect a caucus representative to serve on the National Council
  • Identify, if not pursue, funding opportunities in conjunction with the caucus chair and coordinator

Steering Committees periodically hold teleconference meetings during the year, at a date and time that suits the majority of its members.

  • To have ready access to all corporate information, such as financial records and statements, minutes of decision-making meetings, organizational records, and policy manuals.
  • To receive fair and reasonable notice of all steering committee and membership meetings, and to have equal opportunity to participate in such meetings.

Responsibilities of Caucus Steering Committee members:

  • To participate in steering committee discussions regularly, and to participate in the decision-making of the caucus steering committee, in consultation with member groups.
  • To be familiar with caucus contracts, policies, and current programs, and relevant policies and programs of the RCEN. In particular, to be familiar with the RCEN policies on conflict of interest, membership, taking positions and use of the RCEN name, delegate selection, and caucus operation.
