Plants with Novel Traits
By and large, GE crops are legally considered
"Substantially Equivalent" meaning they
are no different from their non-GE relatives and
hence are not subject to different regulatory
testing. Plants with novel traits, are those plants
that have been modified to express qualities that
are substantially different from the natural species.
These could be plants modified to contain unrelated
genes to express pharmaceutical traits or proteins
destined for industrial use (such as enzymes).
The government of Canada is striving to develop
detection techniques for plants with novel traits.
