PM and O3 Demolition and Construction

The Canada wide standard for PM and Ozone, which was endorsed by the CCME Ministers (except Québec) in June, 2000, recognizes that the long-term air quality management goal for PM and ozone is to minimize the risks of these pollutants to human health and the environment.

The CCME agreed to a list of Joint Initial Actions that aim to reduce pollutant emissions contributing to particulate matter and ozone. In response to one of these Joint Initial Action commitments, Environment Canada is organizing a two-day national workshop (March 8/9) to bring together stakeholders from the construction and demolition industry, including industry associations, all levels of government, as well as health and environmental non-governmental organizations. The first draft of a Foundation Analysis Report for the Construction and Demolition Sector is expected soon from Environment Canada. Contact Ken Smith (819) 956-9752 for more information. Following this workshop, a mutli-stakeholder workgroup will be established to carry out work throughout the year (including Codes of Practice, and a Draft Municipal By-law). ENGO participation in the broader workgroup will likely draw from the ENGOs present at the March 8-9 workshop. For more information on PM and Ozone, visit the CEN Energy Caucus Website or call Derek at 613.728.9810 (22). Members interested in the March 8-9 workshop should submit their interest, including full contact coordinates and a brief (less than 300 words) description of their experience and expertise on the file by noon February 23.

ENGO Selection Results:

ENGO members of the CCME PM and Ozone Core Advisory Group (Martha Kostuch (Prairie Acid Rain Coalition), Anna Tilman (Save the Oak Ridges Morraine), John Bennett (Sierra Club of Canada) and Bruce Walker (STOP), will be joined by Jim Mahon (Great Lakes United) and Dave Stevens (CHOKE) at the meeting. The Foundation Analysis Report for the Construction and Demolition Sector is expected soon from Environment Canada. Contact Derek Stack for more information.
