Environment Canada is organizing a one day national multi-stakeholder workshop to bring together representatives from the construction and demolition industry, all levels of government, as well as health and environmental non-governmental organizations. The purpose of the workshop is to communicate existing information available to industry and governments and to receive input from participants on the development of tools and strategies to prevent and reduce emissions of air pollutants from this sector.

Participant feedback is intended to comment on the potential for reduced emissions, improved air quality, increased business profitability, improved workplace health and safety, enhanced relations with residents and surrounding businesses, and better compliance with government regulations. The workshop will involve a presentation of a draft Code of Practice for the Canadian construction and demolition sector. This document will outline various options which may be used to prevent and reduce air emissions from construction and demolition activities. A socio-economic analysis of the costs and benefits of reducing air emissions will also be provided, as well as the results from a survey of the industry on current emission management techniques and awareness regarding the issue of air pollution from the sector.
