1st Meeting of the Ad Hoc Open Ended Working
Group on Protected Areas (PA WG-1) under the United
Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)
The RCEN selected Sabine Jessen, Conservation Director at the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society-BC Chapter, to be the ENGO representative for the official Canadian delegation at the 1st Meeting of the Ad Hoc Open Ended Working Group on Protected Areas (PA WG-1) under the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), held in Montecatini, Italy June13-17, 2005. The RCEN is seeking one ENGO representative to
be part of the Official Canadian Delegation for
the upcoming PA WG-1 of the CBD.
It is important that the ENGO representative
has knowledge and experience related to the themes
and issues that will be discussed during the meeting:
- Options for cooperation for the establishment
of marine protected areas in marine areas beyond
the limits of national jurisdiction
- Options for mobilizing financial resources
for the implementation of the programme of work
on protected areas
- Further development of "tool kits"
for the identification, designation, management,
monitoring and evaluation of national and regional
systems of protected areas
- Ways and means to improve implementation of
the programme of work

More over, it is required that the ENGO representative
be involve in the preparatory process including
seek input from other ENGOs and participate in
consultation on the Canadian position. It is also
required from the ENGO representative to write
a report for RCEN following the event.
The Biodiversity Convention Office of Environment
Canada will reimburse, consistent with Treasury
Board Guidelines, transportation, daily allowance
(meals & incidentals) and accommodation expenses
for the selected ENGO participant.

community is invited to participate (at their
own expenses) by registering directly through
the CBD Secretariat in Montreal. More information
