Reference Group On Metal Mining Effluent Regulations

The RCEN Mining Caucus is seeking interested ENGO representatives to form a Reference Group that will be involved in the review of the proposed amendments to the Metal Mining Effluent Regulation (MMER). Environment Canada organized a workshop in the fall to discuss proposed amendments to the MMER and it was decided that a Multi-stakeholder advisory group (MAG) will be formed to undertake the review of all these proposed amendments. See more information about the MMER, the workshop last fall and the MAG on the Mining Caucus webpage.

The Mining Caucus Reference Group (RG) will be made of ENGO representatives interested and knowledgeable on issues related to mines. The RG will be working with the 4 ENGO representatives to the MAG.

Role and level of commitment required for the RG members:

  • RG work will begin at the end of March 2005 and will end after the amendments are posted in Gazette 2, around December 2006;
  • Attend bi-monthly RG conference calls from March 2005 to December 2006 (the number of calls will be in conjunction with the schedule of work of the MAG);
  • Give input to the 4 ENGO representatives part of the MAG;
  • Contribute to two official reports to be presented to Environment Canada on ENGO’s perspectives on the proposed amendments (each report will be presented to EC before a MAG annual face-to-face meeting);
  • Support the work of the MAG ENGO representatives.

The role and commitment will be reviewed during the first RG conference call and may be subject to change.

If you are interested please fill-out the online application form by March 15, 2005. For more information, please contact Chantal Bois at 613-728-9810 ext. 24.
