Fifth Session Of United Nations Forum On Forests (UNFF5)

The Canadian Environment Network (RCEN) has been invited to nominate one ENGO representative for the official Canadian Delegation for the fifth session of the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF5) to be held in New York, New York, from May 16 to 27, 2005.

More information and documents are now available on the UNFF's web page. The main topic for discussion will be: Parameters of a mandate for developing a legal framework on all types of forests.

ENGO Representative Expectations:

  • Review materials given by the government in advance of the UNFF5
  • Solicit views from the Canadian NGO community
  • Adequately reflect the views of Canadian NGOs
  • Seek guidance from Canadian NGOs during the UNFF5 via email through CEN
  • Prepare a report following the Forum to be distributed to ENGOs by the CEN
  • Participate actively in the Canadian Delegation meetings
  • Abide by the rules of conduct and confidentiality determined by the government

ENGO Representative Requirements:

  • Experience with UN inter-governmental negotiation
  • Broad knowledge and understanding of forest related issues
  • Specific expertise on UNFF5 themes that will be discussed
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to remain in close email contact with the CEN and NGOs during the Forum

Also, all members in the Canadian delegation will be contingent upon signing a participation agreement prior to departure for UNFF5. The conditions of this agreement will be strictly enforced by the Head of delegation. Travel, meals and accommodation will be covered for the ENGO representative as per Treasury Board Rules.
