Workshop to review the New Substances Notification Regulations provisions governing organisms other than micro-organisms

The RCEN selected 10 ENGO delegates to attend a two-day multi-stakeholder workshop on the research and development exemptions and notification requirements for organisms other than micro-organisms under the New Substances Notification Regulations (NSNR) (Organisms) of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999. The workshops took place on June 15–16, in Ottawa, Ontario. The selected ENGO delegates are:

ENGO Report

The workshop was aimed at identifying improvements in the regulatory scheme that will: Maintain or improve the protection of the environment and human health; Allow the appropriate assessment of all living organisms covered by the NSNR (Organisms), including those manufactured or imported for R&D purposes; Strive to make the process and regulatory requirements clear such that they are understood by all parties, and enforceable and; Improve the notification and assessment process by ensuring that it remains cost-effective, flexible, science-informed and fair.

Specific workshop objectives included: Providing background information to assist participants in developing and sharing their views on the issues and options that need to be addressed to improve ss.2(4) and s.4 of the NSNR (Organisms) and; Soliciting feedback from interested parties on the options for ss.2(4) and s.4 of the NSNR (Organisms) detailed in the Discussion Document (available by end-March).
