ENGO Face-to-Face and Cross-Caucus Meetings for Environment Canada’s Sector Sustainability Tables

Where: Ottawa
When: March 2nd & 3rd, 2006
Number of Delegates: up to 30 ENGO delegates
Deadline to Apply: 4:00 p.m. EST, January 27th, 2006

The RCEN is seeking up to 30 ENGO representatives to take part in an ENGO face-to-face meeting on March 2 to discuss further involvement in the Sector Sustainability Tables (SSTs), and cross-caucus meeting on March 3, 2006. The deadline to apply is Friday, January 27th, 2006.

As requested during the summer 2005 ENGO teleconference, RCEN pursued funding to organize another ENGO face-to-face meeting for 2006. This full-day face-to-face meeting will take place on March 2nd, 2006 and will allow ENGOs to receive updates on all the current SST processes, to discuss further ENGO involvement and to have a presentation from the government on next steps. The following day, March 3rd, there will be a half-day cross-caucus meeting which will provide caucus representatives with a forum for discussing common issues and exploring collaboration opportunities. The Canadian Environmental Network (RCEN) will oversee the organization of this Forum.

To apply to be on the delegation, please fill out the online application form

Travel, accommodation and meals will be covered as per Treasury Board Guidelines. Delegate selection criteria will include: geographic, gender and language balance; diversity of knowledge/expertise and approach; group size and scope; and experience in the ENGO community and with government consultation. Knowledge of the SST process is an asset.

NOTE: Please submit possible discussion items for either March 2 or 3, including issues related to the ENGO boycott of the Chemical SST, by January 27th to Suzanne Boileau.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The Sector Sustainability Tables (SSTs) are a permanent forum for collaboration between federal/provincial/territorial governments, industry, Aboriginal organizations and non-governmental organizations. The SSTs are intended to identify how to meet the goals of the Competitiveness and Environmental Sustainability Framework (CESF) through jointly developed approach and long-term planning.

Early sectors that were selected for the Tables include: forestry, mining, energy, chemicals and a cross-cutting table. Sector Table operational phase meetings have commenced for the mining and energy sectors. The Forest SST completed the design-phase in November and the operational phase will be launched in February (the RCEN-selected FSST delegate will be announced early next week). The Cross-Cutting table is still in its early design phase. ENGOs have declined to participate in the Chemical Table and have sent a letter to that effect outlining their reasons on July 20th, 2005 to EC, signed by 24 environmental groups. If you would like a copy of this letter, please contact Suzanne Boileau at (613) 728-9810 x 30.
