When: September 19-25, 2005
Where: Vienna, Austria
Number of ENGO Delegates sought: 1
Deadline to apply: Wednesday, September 7, 2005

The final preparatory meeting of the Strategic Approach to International Chemical Management (SAICM) development process is to be held in Vienna, Austria, September 19-25, 2005. The development of SAICM was initiated at the World Summit on Sustainable Development held in Johannesburg, South Africa in 2002 to address the need for a coordinated, comprehensive international approach to chemicals management.

The Canadian Environment Network (RCEN) has been invited to nominate one ENGO representative to participate on the Canadian Delegation for the PrepCom3 meetings in Vienna, Austria. The successful candidate should have expertise in the field of chemicals management. The Government of Canada will reimburse, consistent with Treasury Board Guidelines, the travel and accommodation expenses for the chosen nominee.

This meeting is the final of three preparatory meetings and the final opportunity to have a significant impact on the formation of the foundation for this international chemicals management regime. The major issues that are to be discussed at this meeting will be financial considerations, institutional mechanisms, and the overarching policy statement that will guide SAICM’s development, scope and purpose.

Additional information on the SAICM is available on the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) website.
