Through CEN, the Society for Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry
(SETAC) is requesting the participation of one (1) ENGO representative
for its international workshop on persistence, bioaccumulation
and toxicity (PBT) as it is applied to hazard evaluation of metals.
The workshop will be held from 3-8 May, 2003, in Pensacola Florida.
There is currently only one other ENGO (out of approximately 50
people who will be attending), and the organizers would like to
identify another. Most attendees will be technical experts from
either industry, government or academia.
The meeting discussions will be focused on the science behind
application of PBT to metals, so the ideal candidate would have
an academic background (an M.Sc. or Ph.D.) in a relevant field,
some metals experience/knowledge, and ENGO affiliations.
Although the discussions will be technical, the key underlying
questions will be policy ones. For example, the workshop will
consider possible approaches to evaluating the "persistence"
of metals. As you may know, current hazard evaluation approaches
identify all metals as "persistent" because they do
not degrade. Industry and others are proposing alternative ways
of evaluating the persistence of metals (e.g., based on rates
of removal from the water column by sedimentation), that would
result in some metals being "non-persistent" in surface
waters for example. The workshop attendees will be asked to identify
the most appropriate approaches for evaluation of persistence,
as well as bioaccumulation and toxicity, for metals.
There will be a reading list to help workshop attendees prepare
for the discussions. Ideally, attendees should spend some time
reviewing the more important documents in advance of the workshop.
There will be no need to prepared a formal report.
Travel and accommodation expenses will be covered. If you are
interested in participating, please fill out the application form
below AND INCLUDE YOUR CV and send it back by March 26th to Barbara
Schaefer at barbara@cen-rce.org or fax (613) 728-2963.
