Appel à l'action
Friends of Clayoquot Sound – Non à la recherche de cuivre dans la baie Clayoquot!
Vancouver-based Selkirk Metals Corporation has applied to the BC Ministry of Mines for a permit to do exploratory drilling for copper on Catface Mountain in Clayoquot Sound.
Drilling would determine whether it’s economically feasible to develop the low-grade copper-molybdenum deposit on Catface into a huge open-pit mine. The potential mine would be one of the biggest industrial projects on Vancouver Island and would remove the top third of Catface Mountain. It would be located in the middle of the Clayoquot Sound UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, within sight of the tourist town of Tofino.
Exploratory drilling would in itself be damaging, as it would involve re-building/building roads to bring in drill rigs, and drill holes could leach toxic levels of heavy metals and chemicals into groundwater and surrounding salmon streams.
PLEASE CONTACT THE BC GOVERNMENT NOW AND TELL THEM THAT YOU DO NOT WANT EXPLORATORY DRILLING OR AN ENVIRONMENTALLY DESTRUCTIVE COPPER MINE ON CATFACE MOUNTAIN IN CLAYOQUOT SOUND, AND ASK THEM TO REFUSE SELKIRK’S APPLICATION FOR EXPLORATORY DRILLING.
Your letter (or fax/email/phone call) can be short and to the point. For example:
“I do not want any mining or exploratory drilling on Catface Mountain in Clayoquot Sound. I request that Selkirk Metals’ application for exploratory drilling be denied. Please reply and inform me how you are dealing with Selkirk’s drilling application for Catface.”
For more information about the potential Catface mine that you may want to incorporate into your message, you can check out our website www.focs.ca.
A public outcry is needed to stop Catface exploratory drilling/potential mining in its tracks before it goes any further. Let’s inundate government with letters, faxes, emails and phone calls! Your participation is invaluable. Thank you for speaking up against destructive industrialization of Clayoquot Sound’s wilderness!
